Digestive Health

When That 'Gut Feeling' is Actually an Illness
That’s why we’re here.

At St. Francis - Emory Healthcare, we are committed to helping patients manage their digestive health through an individualized approach, focusing on the whole patient and not just their symptoms. Our expertise in this area begins with our nutrition department and extends throughout our medical staff, who are trained in the latest technologies and techniques available.

If you're experiencing digestive discomforts like heartburn, upset stomach, acid reflux, or painful gas, our physicians are ready and able to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions. If you don't know where to start, take the digestive health assessment below and learn more about conditions you may have.

Peace of mind is just a screening away.

A colonoscopy helps find polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous. It can also identify colon and rectal cancers early, when the odds of successful treatment are highest. Colon and rectal cancer rates have increased in young and middle-aged adults.* If you’re 45 or older, ask your doctor about scheduling a colonoscopy.

Early Detection of Colon Cancer

Why get screened for colon cancer?

Screening may find diseases at an early stage, when a doctor has a better chance of treating or preventing the disease. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends screening for colon cancer:

  • At age 40 for any person with a first-degree relative with colon cancer.
  • At age 45 for African Americans because they have an increased risk of developing the disease.
  • At age 45 for people who are not at increased risk of the disease.

Center for Digestive Disorders

Complaints related to the digestive tract are some of the most common reasons many people take over-the-counter medications. But a quick fix doesn't always work and might not be the best solution for what ails you.

Gastroenterologists, or "GIs," are medical specialists with extensive training in diseases of the digestive tract. Gastroenterologists perform a colonoscopy to screen for, and hopefully prevent, the development of colon cancer by removing pre-malignant polyps. The physicians at the St. Francis Center for Digestive Disorders treat many other conditions such as liver disease, esophageal reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcers.
